Eight Laws of Health

We'd like to share with you The Eight Laws of Health as outlined by the Seventh Day Adventists.  We're not Seventh Day Adventists, but it's nice to be able to embrace principles that can be shared amongst the diverse Body of Christ.  Isn't it wonderful to learn different lessons from the different members of the Body of Christ?!

1.  Pure Air- Look into the purity of the air you breathe.  Make changes if possible...there are some who make geographical moves just to find pure air.

2.  Sunlight- Make sure you daily receive sunlight on your skin.  Sunlight produces certain hormones and nutrients like vitamin D that are very important for healthy bodily functions.  Make sure not to get too much but just enough sunlight.  Pay attention to how your skin reacts to the sun and adjust accordingly...spend less or  more time outside.

3.  Moderation/Temperance/Self-Control- This is a hard one for many Americans who are used to the "have when and as often as I want it" mentality.  Get just what you need...no more, no less.  Paul, from the Bible, urges us to be "temperate in all things".  We should flee from what is harmful, avoid unneeded extremes, and be careful not to overdo those things that we enjoy (of course, those things need to line up with the nature of Christ).  Here's some examples of being temperate:  not over exercising, not overeating, not trying to be involved in too many activities...sports, social, etc., not being materialistic...  We need the Holy Spirit working within us to be temperate...it's not always easy and goes against our sinful, human nature.

4.  Rest- Rest is so important!  Getting adequate sleep is, of course, important.  Resting without sleeping is important as well.  Take time to slow down and reflect on the Lord.  Stop your racing around for a while and be still!

5.  Exercise/Activity- Be an active person.  Walk, run and skip with your children, rake leaves, and swim.  Spend as much time on your feet as possible.

6.  Nutrition- Eat real foods...those that are in their whole form and full of nutrients.  Try to eat as many raw fruits and vegetables as possible, and avoid overly processed foods.  Try to eat natural, whole foods such as potatoes, unprocessed slabs of meat, whole grains...things like you'd find straight from the farm.

7.  Clean Water- Water is so important for many of our bodily functions, and if water is so important, the water we take in needs to be clean.  Do what you can to secure a clean water supply.  In one of our previous homes, we had a whole-house water filtration system.  It was terrific!  We had pure drinking water and chlorine-free baths and showers as well.  We now use a Berkey filtration system...these are easy to find and are effective in filtering contaminates and bacteria.  These filters are small enough to sit on your counter and use gravity to filter the water.  There are many options out there in regards to water filtration...do some research.  We are in the process of preparing to relocate to a South American country called Uruguay...just about everything's pure there...we won't have to filter our water anymore.

8.  Trust in the Lord- It's important to maintain a healthy, intimate relationship with the Lord through prayer, Bible reading, fellowship with other believers, obedience to Godly principles and to His promptings, and trusting in Him to supply your needs (and sometimes wants as well).  Without the Lord, our lives lack purpose and joy...

Using God's Pharmacy to Treat Illness and Maintain Health

We'd  like to share some natural cures for illness, but these things can be used for maintaining overall health as well.  God has given us so much to aid us in keeping our bodies healthy, and these things come without all the scary side effects so prevalent with conventional medicine!  The items below are used all year around to help keep our family healthy.  We use these in addition to feeding our spirits,  eating a healthy, well-varied diet and getting plenty of sleep and exercise.

*ECHINACEA- This herb is very effective in treating all sorts of ailments especially chronic and acute bacterial and viral infections.  We use echinacea for just about anything...downed immune systems, colds, respiratory infections, stomach viruses...  We usually take echinacea in capsule and liquid form but also have had it in tea form.

*GOLDENSEAL- This herb is good for nearly every disease.  We usually alternate between this and echinacea in treating infections and downed immune systems.  We've used goldenseal in capsule and liquid form.  This herb is especially powerful and shouldn't be overused and should be used with caution during pregnancy.

*ELDERBERRY- This herb is highly effective in treating flus, colds, and sinus problems.  Elderberry has been found to reduce congestion and induce sweating.  Our family uses elderberry in liquid and capsule form.  If taking it in liquid form, try to find some that's been sweetened.  The unsweetened syrup is incredibly bitter!

*GARLIC- Garlic is a powerful and readily available substance!  We use garlic to enhance our immune systems and to fight just about anything that ails us.  Garlic can be taken daily to help with circulation and heart function....it's an excellent blood thinner.  Raw garlic can be easily incorporated into dressings, salads, and so many dishes.  If you are very ill and need to take it in large quantities, it is best taken in capsule form because of its strong taste.  Our oldest child is not bothered by the liquid form at all...she actually seems to enjoy it!  There are so many home remedies that involve the use of garlic...do some research.  You'll be amazed!

*VITAMIN C- This vitamin is highly effective in boosting the immune system.  It is widely accepted that vitamin C works well!  We take vitamin C in chewable tablet form, in fizzy drink form (Emergen-C), and in capsule form.  We try to be consistent about taking this vitamin during the winter months to help ward off the yucky wintertime illnesses.

*PROBIOTICS (FRIENDLY BACTERIA)- If the stomach virus is going around, we make sure we take lots of probiotics!  We've found that they seem to prevent the virus at times, and if the virus has already taken root, they greatly lessen and shorten the duration of the symptoms.  Probiotics are great for daily use in maintaining healthy digestive bacteria.  Probiotics are fairly easy to find and come in a variety of forms...kefir, yogurt, capsules, liquid, powder...

*RAW HONEY- Honey is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal, so it can be used to treat a wide variety of ailments.  We've used raw honey on wounds and even staph boils.  Honey is also very effective in settling coughs.  Try to find a good quality honey that's raw and from bees not treated with harsh chemicals.  Honey is so wonderful because it's yummy and has so many healing properties!

*COLLOIDAL SILVER- Colloidal silver (liquid suspension of microscopic silver particles) has proven to be powerful in bringing healing to our family!  We've used to treat colds, staph infection, stomach viruses, and even taken it daily for periods of time to help with immune system function.  Sid suffered from a nasty staph infection on and off for over two years.  Upon discovering it was staph, Sid took traditional antibiotics for 5 weeks, and still the boils kept trying to pop up.  He began using colloidal silver along with some other immune boosters and has been boil-free for a number of months now!  The boils not only affected him but the kids and I too...we struggled with occasional boils as well.

*CHARCOAL- This substance (obtained from health food store...not just regular charcoal) is highly effective in treating wounds (such as staph boils).  It can be made into a poultice (water, charcoal powder, and ground flax seed) and placed on all sorts of skin wounds.  Charcoal can be mixed with water and taken internally if needing to absorb and neutralize poisons.  We've found it to be highly effective in treating nausea.

*TEA TREE OIL:  We use tea tree oil as an antiseptic for cuts, scraps, bumps, and scrapes.  We also used it with some water in a squirt bottle as a surface cleaner.  Tea tree oil is readily available...you can even find it at WalMart!

When searching for natural healing substances, make sure you find quality sources.  Buy products from trustworthy and reputable companies.  Check with a health store near you or search online.  Look into the brands I've listed below...as far as we can tell, these are good sources for quality products.
